Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst I

The Maricopa Association of Governments seeks candidates for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst I position. The successful candidate will acquire, update, maintain, and analyze various GIS and tabular datasets. These datasets include, but are not limited to housing, census/demographic data, business inventory including Maricopa County Trip Reduction Program data, and other regional data. The ideal candidate must demonstrate understanding of GIS concepts including a proficiency with ArcGIS, and working with large spatial datasets. Job functions include data maintenance, conducting regional and subregional analytics, and communicating results through innovative maps and presentations. The ideal candidate will work in a high-performing team environment and must possess strong communication and computer skills, including knowledge of relational databases (Microsoft SQL Server or Access preferred). Experience working with Microsoft Excel is required. Candidate needs to have a strong attention to detail and ability to find innovative solutions to develop meaningful analytics. Knowledge of GIS programming languages is desirable but not required. A Bachelor degree in GIS, geography, computer science, or a related field is required.

Job functions:

  • Support MAG as the subject matter expert on housing related data in the region. Research, evaluate, acquire, and analyze housing datasets that include housing permits/completions, apartments, and group quarters
  • Research, extract, analyze, display, and present demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau
  • Evaluate, process, enhance, and analyze data from the Maricopa County Trip Reduction Program
  • Maintain resource inventory such as major retail centers, hotels/motels, public facilities, schools, etc.
  • Provide data and analytical support for the MAG online mapping tools, and data center
  • Conduct research and analysis developing reports, charts, maps, and graphs using both historical and current data
  • Develop innovative infographics, maps, charts, and other presentation materials with socioeconomic data
  • Provide general GIS and mapping support to teams within MAG
  • Working with the Information Services team, implement data evaluation and analysis techniques that ensure data integrity
  • Responsible for data extraction, merging, cleansing, and manipulation using advanced SQL
  • Prepare and enhance technical documentation for procedures, processes, and data flows  
  • Interact with MAG member agencies on data collection and data review activities
  • Respond to inquiries related to housing and demographic data from MAG staff, MAG member agencies, and the public
  • Research new data sources and procedures available to enhance databases
  • Participate in ongoing team meetings - provide status reports and input regarding work procedures, data findings, and new research
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with MAG member agencies, MAG staff, other agencies, and the general public
  • Effectively communicate technical information to nontechnical audiences through the creation and delivery of public presentations

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in GIS, geography, computer science, or related field
  • Minimum one year relevant experience
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS Desktop, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel
  • Working knowledge of geodatabase design
  • Experience with data analysis and statistical techniques
  • Demonstrate attention to detail to ensure highest quality data products
  • Ability to problem solve and perform quality control/quality assurance on large datasets
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving and organizational skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a fast-paced, high-pressure team environment

Knowledge of the following is desirable but not required:

  • Census and demographic data
  • Experience with large relational databases, statistical analysis, and Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Knowledge of GIS programming languages, such as Python, Visual Basic, and C#

Salary range is $44,092 to $66,138 (grade: 28), depending on skills and experience.
