Summary

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of entry-level GIS functions, including but not limited to inputting, updating, and maintaining geodatasets, shapefiles; and connections to various GIS database applications and services.

Examples of Duties

Maintains, updates, and assists in the development of the Town's GIS system through thematic mapping, geodatabase maintenance, metadata, scanning and plotting, data compilation, and GPS collection.   Performs research of the county and town records for pertinent data to be entered into the GIS database; produces digital and paper maps, gathers geographic data and other map information; reads and interprets source documents such as; engineering plans, plat maps, and legal descriptions.

Updates required data into GIS database using data conversion methods and techniques, including parcels, new developments, new lots, addressing, buildings, and new infrastructure (i.e.  streets, signs, utilities, etc.); conducts research, in the field and in the office, to resolve conflicting information and ensure accuracy of data, populates spatial attribute tables for new or existing Town GIS layers, and provides technical support to Town staff.

Typical Qualification

Education and/or experience equivalent to one (1) year full time GIS system management or closely related work;  OR a Bachelor's degree in Geography, Computer Science, Engineering or closely related area may substitute for one year of the required experience.
