Mapping 'All City'- A Presentation by Dr. Stefano Bloch Thursday, March 15, 5:30 pm, The University of Arizona Museum of Art
In conjunction the exhibition You Are Here: Mediated Understanding of our World, Dr. Stefano Bloch, a cultural geographer at the University of Arizona, will discuss how graffiti writers possess an alternative "mental map" of the city. They develop this map as they move across and write atop the built environment in an attempt to "go all city." Dr. Bloch will read from his forthcoming book and field questions about that cryptic, prolific, and widely maligned practice of illicit wall writing. The talk is free with Museum admission. You Are Here: Mediated Understanding of our World features functional maps in addition to artworks that incorporate cartographic vocabulary and explores the themes of navigation, accuracy, and presumed reality. The exhibition is on view through April 1.
