Abstract:  Shocking and horrendous images of tragedy and loss on the evening news provides ample motivation for many bright and talented geospatial professionals in their quest to use geospatial technologies to limit the consequences of disaster and crisis.  Such endeavors, while well intentioned, involve cutting edge applications of the most advanced technologies our industry has to offer without full understanding of the conditions under which such solutions are applied, the true needs and technical abilities of users, and the overall modus operandi of emergency response.  Case studies highlighting the need for simple solutions which integrate well into the emergency response life-cycle and culture are will help provide future direction for research and technology development.
