A Successful UA GIS Career Fair 2013

March 8, 2013

The 2nd Annual UA GIS Career Fair, sponsored by the MS-GIST program, was a huge success.  There were 18 different booths hosted by GIS professionals in industry, government and from across the campus.   A wonderful panel of local professionals discussed the state of the GIS industry in Tucson and best practices.  David Vaillancourt, Solution Engineer, ESRI provided an insightful demonstration on "Working with LiDAR and 3D data in ArcGIS 10.1".  Rudy Stricklan and Lee Harbers resume and mock interview workshop was a huge hit as students lined up to get advice.
The day's events were also highlighted in the Daily Wildcat newspaper.  Pictures from the event can be found on the MS-GIST facebook page.
The day's activities were followed by an ESRI Dev Meet Up at the Arizona Inn where over 110 people turned out.  This Dev Meet Up is a social gathering for developers to discuss geospatial technologies, complementary third-party tools, and development platforms.  The Chris Turner keynote, "The Challenges & Opportunities of Tribal GIS in a GeoDesign World" highlighted an ongoing GIS project lead by Dr. Iris Patton with the Tohono O'odham Nation. This was followed by a series of shorter lightning round presentation.  Pictures from the event can be found on the MS-GIST facebook page. The huge success of the ESRI Dev Meet up at the Arizona Inn led to an organization call to host a second one in the fall if there were enough presenters.
